Week 2 set to kick off tonight
PARKERSBURG – There were not too many surprises in Week 1 of the high school football season locally.
But that was only one week, and there’s lots of football to be played yet. All the fun is really just beginning.
After its 800th win last week, Parkersburg is off this week, so Parkersburg South is tonight’s headliner in town, trying to go 2-0 on the season with 1-0 University supplying the competition at 7:30 p.m. at the Erickson All-Sports Facility.
The Patriots passed for 255 yards and rushed for 211 last week in topping Ripley 35-27, but also surrendered 237 yards on the ground to the Vikings. The latter could prove problematic for South tonight as the visiting Hawks not only like to run, but also play solid defense.
In Ohio, the main game in the area tonight is Marietta, 1-0 after rolling over Morgan in Week 1, at 0-1 Warren, the Big Reds’ 800th victim last week, at 7 p.m.
Williamstown, at 1-0 after thumping Tyler Consolidated 30-7 in its season opener, tangles tonight with host Magnolia, off last week, at New Martinsville at 7:30 p.m.
A key early-season LKC matchup tonight at 7:30 p.m. pits Wirt County (0-1) at St. Marys (1-0), fresh off a 47-0 Week 1 rout of Ritchie County. The Tigers dropped their season opener 30-15 at Valley (Fayette).
Belpre (1-0) faces a rough 7:30 p.m. road test tonight against TVC Hocking foe Trimble (1-0) after dispatching Fort Frye 35-21 last week, while 1-0 Waterford, fresh from a 26-18 double-overtime victory over Miller last week, welcomes in 0-1 Wahama, which bowed 27-6 to Ravenswood in Week 1.
A glut of 7:30 p.m. West Virginia contests tonight find 1-0 versus 0-1 teams: Point Pleasant (1-0) at Ripley (0-1). Ritchie County (0-1) at Roane County (1-0), Tyler Consolidated (0-1) at Doddridge County (1-0). Also, Sherman (0-1) plays at Calhoun County (1-0) at 7 p.m. tonight in the Red Devils’ homecoming game.
Ravenswood (1-0) at Webster County (1-0) and Gilmer County (0-1) at South Harrison (0-1), both 7:30 p.m. starts, round out tonight’s W.Va. prep grid outings.
Other games involving Buckeye state teams tonight are: Fort Frye (0-1) at 0-1 Van, W.Va. and Buckeye Trail (0-1) at Caldwell (1-0), both 7 p.m. kickoffs, as well as Southern (1-0) at Frontier (1-0), Miller (0-1) at Eastern (0-1) and South Gallia (1-0) at Federal Hocking (0-1), all at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., Parkersburg Catholic, 0-1 after a narrow 13-12 loss at Buffalo, tries to bounce back against Notre Dame (0-1) on the Stadium Field turf at PHS.
