Arthur G. Olds

Arthur G. Olds, 92, of St. Marys, W.Va., departed this life on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, after an extended illness.

Arthur was born Feb. 1, 1922, in Arkport, N.Y. He was the son of the late Delbert and Eva Olds, and brother of the late Richard Olds, all of Arkport, N.Y.

Arthur graduated from Arkport High School. He received a scholarship to play football at Syracuse University. After college, he went to work for Union Carbide where his skills led him to work on the Manhattan Project. He then served his country in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific at the end of World War II. After his Navy service, he returned to Union Carbide in New York, and later transferred to the new Union Carbide facility in Friendly, W.Va., where he retired after 39 years as Health and Safety Director.

He was a member of VFW Post 222, the former American Legion Post 79, BPOE Elks Lodge #1701, St. Marys Lodge #41 A. F. & A. M., the National Rifle Association, and Ducks Unlimited. He has also served his community and state in several different capacities. He was Mayor of St. Marys for 16 years from 1978 to 1994, Past-President of the Mid-Ohio Valley Mayors Association, a former member of the West Virginia Municipal League, former member and Past-President of the St. Marys Kiwanis Club, served as Boy Scout Commissioner of the former Kootaga Area Council, and was a member of the Pleasants County Senior Nutrition Board. He had served as Chairman of Pleasants County/WVU Extension Service Committee. He also served on the visiting committee for WVU College of Extension and Continuing Education for 16 years. He was a former Chairman of Pleasants County/St. Marys Planning Commission. He was a former member and Secretary of Pleasants County Parks and Recreation Commission, and when the new Pleasants County Aquatic Center opened in 2013, the center was named in his honor. He was a former member of the St. Marys “Light Committee”, a charter member of the Pleasants County Development Authority, and a member of the Pleasants County Local Emergency Planning Committee. He was a member of the Susquicentennial Committee, the 150th Anniversary of the City of St. Marys. He served on the nominating committee for ARC National Board of Governors, a member of AARP and Past-President of Pleasants County Chapter and served as state liaison.

He was honored with the 2009 Andrus Award for the state of WV for his community service. He was awarded “The Governor’s Distinguished West Virginian Award” in 2002. He served as manager of the Pleasants County Chapter of the American Red Cross for over 25 years, while also serving as a National Disaster Consultant and volunteer for over 30 years. He was a currently member of the Board of Directors of the Mid-Ohio Valley Red Cross Chapter. He had assisted with or directed about 35 disaster operations for the American Red Cross. He was recognized from the Clara Barton Society for his support and commitment to the Red Cross mission.

Arthur is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marion; son, Douglas (Rhonda) Olds; and grandchildren, Robert (Alison), Frank (Tiffany), Brett Olds and Jessica Poe; great-grandson, Tyler; daughter, Barbara (Richard) Lund; grandchildren, Derrick and Ryan Lund; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, at the Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, W.Va., with the Rev. Michael Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the St. Marys IOOF Cemetery with military graveside rites. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 29, and from 10-11 a.m. Monday, June 30, at the funeral home.
