Vienna VFD serves ice cream treats
VIENNA – Ice cream, cake and pie were in abundance during the 73rd annual Vienna Volunteer Fire Department Ice Cream Social at Spencer Park Friday.
Vienna Volunteer Fire Department Chief Steve Scholl said proceeds from the social help the department pay for training and other items the city does not fund.
“This helps with training processes,” he said. “Basically this covers any unfunded mandates and other requirements the city does not fund. It gives us some extra funds to operate.”
Scholl said he did not have final numbers for Friday’s event; the average attendance for past socials is between 4,000 and 5,000.
Scholl said the food at the social is a combination of donated and items they had to buy.
“All of the cake and pies are donated by the citizens,” he said. “We supply the ice cream and hot dogs.”
In addition to the food, Scholl said the social had musical entertainment, games for children and a dunking booth.
Debbie Foutty of Vienna, a teacher at Neale Elementary School, said the social is a great community event for Vienna and she makes it to the event every year.
“It’s getting together with everyone in the neighborhood,” she said. “I teach at Neale Elementary so I get to see all my students after they are out for the summer.”
Foutty said the ice cream was an attraction for her grandson.
Dave Foutty Jr. of Vienna said he comes to the social to help support the community.
“We come to give as much support as we can to the men and women who volunteer to protect us,” he said.
Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp said the turnout appeared to be very good.
“Once the weather decided it was not going to rain anymore, the crowds came out,” he said. “We are very, very pleased.”
Rapp said he was not sure but the Vienna event may be the oldest in the area.
“I’d say 73 years is a very good run,” he said.
Vienna City Councilman Jim Miracle said to his knowledge the Barlow Fair is probably the oldest community event in the area at about 175 years.
“This is probably close to being the oldest one in Wood County,” Miracle said.
