Three Big Reds make finals in individual events
MORGANTOWN – Several Parkersburg High School swimmers are still in contention in the girls division at this week’s state swim meet after qualifying for the finals in their respective events.
Thursday at the West Virginia University Natatorium, Jen Standley posted the third fastest time in the 50 freestyle at 25.86 and turned in the fifth fastest time in the 100 freestyle at 57.20.
Also advancing in the final heat for PHS were Tara Foster (sixth in the 50 freestyle) and Hannah Wareheim (sixth in the 100 butterfly).
The Big Reds’ three relays (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley) all qualified among the top six and are in contention for a medal.
“Hannah took off four seconds from her best time in the 100 butterfly, and three girls in the 100 freestyle all had best times,” PHS coach Linda Alt said.
Standley, Wareheim, Foster and Claire Collett combined for the second fastest time in the 200 free relay (1:45.38), while Standley, Lacey Dulaney, Sarah Snider and Collett turned in the third best time in the 400 free relay (3:57.07). Seeded sixth in the 200 medley, the PHS foursome of Lexi Haislop, Wareheim, Foster and Snider jumped up to the fourth fastest time at 1:58.29.
“The medley relay took off four seconds from their previous best, while the 200 freestyle relay took off three seconds,” Alt said.
Looking to secure a ribbon in the consolation heats are Collett (eighth in 200 freestyle and 10th in 100 backstroke), Snider (10th in 200 freestyle and eighth in 500 freestyle), Foster (seventh in 100 freestyle), Dulaney (eighth in 100 freestyle), Haislop (11th in 100 backstroke) and Wareheim (seventh in 100 breaststroke).
For Parkersburg South’s girls, Emily Gersper grabbed the 12th and final qualifying spot in the 100 breaststroke after clocking a 1:16.00. The sophomore also will join teammates Rachel Kirk, Emily Lowden and Anna Pasternak in the consolation heats of both the 400 free and 200 relays. The 400 free relay turned in the 10th best time of 4:12.35, while the 200 free relay had the 11th fastest time of 1:51.94.
