Toys for Tots launches campaign

PARKERSBURG – The Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign in the Mid-Ohio Valley will participate in several drives this weekend.

The Salisbury 4-H Club will collect toys from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Wal-Mart in south Parkersburg and in front of the Wirt County Courthouse in Elizabeth with High Country Off Road, a local 4-wheel drive club that raises thousands of dollars and toys to benefit the less fortunate.

Kayla Bain, a student at Wirt County High School, organized the Wirt County drive. She requested the time and space with the Wirt County commissioners and also arranged for volunteers.

Her plans are to decorate the area in festive holiday decor, with snow, regardless of weather with a snow machine.

The Wirt County Christmas parade will be held after the toy drive at 6 p.m. The Mid-Ohio Valley Toys for Tots life-size train constructed by High Country Off Road will participate with other lighted mobile displays.

From noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, a toy drive will be held and the Toys for Tots Train will be available at Wal-Mart in south Parkersburg.

The drive from 6-9 p.m. will move to City Park in Parkersburg where free Toys for Tots train rides and sleigh rides will be given in the park for a toy donation. The Parkersburg Police Department will be on hand to show its support and to mark the drive location inside the park using the police lights.

More than 50 donation boxes are around the Mid-Ohio Valley to collect donations. More than 20 live toy drives to raise donations are being held.

As has been the practice for the past six years, an all-day toy drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Blennerhassett Hotel on Market Street where a drive-through service will be available and volunteers will unload toys. The Blennerhassett will serve complimentary coffee and hot chocolate in the morning.

U.S. Marines in their dress blues also will be at the hotel.

Toys will be distributed on Dec. 21.
