Parkersburg council, committee meet tonight

PARKERSBURG – Updating building codes and a smoking prohibition at municipal playgrounds are among the items going before Parkersburg City Council today.

Council will meet at 7:30 in council chambers on the second floor of the city Municipal Building and the Urban Renewal Authority will meet in chambers immediately following the regular council meeting. Prior to the meeting at 7 p.m. the Public Works Committee will meet in the small conference room also on the second floor of the Municipal Building.

All meetings are open to the public.

Mayor Bob Newell said he expects little discussion at the regular council meeting on the first reading of an ordinance updating a section of state building code.

“It is state mandated, but we are required to pass it locally as well,” Newell said.

The move brings the city code up to date with changes made by the West Virginia Fire Commission.

At the Public Works Committee, members are being asked to consider a resolution amending the rules and regulations for Parkersburg City Parks that would prohibit all tobacco products within 15 feet of a city playground.

The resolution was sent to committee during the Sept. 10 council meeting at the request of Councilman John Kelly. Kelly had asked whether the regulation would fall under the jurisdiction of the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department rather than the city.

Newell said Monday he believes the city will have to have the change on its books even if the health department was involved.

“I think it has to be our rule,” he said.

The Urban Renewal Authority will consider a request from a citizen to purchase a small parcel of property at 1335 St. Marys Ave. for residential use.
