Hazel Edna Cousten Thomas

Hazel Edna Cousten Thomas, 94, went home to be with her Lord on Aug. 23, 2013, at Camden Clark Medical Center, surrounded by her family.

Hazel was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Tyler County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Creen Anthony (Jack) Cousten and Chesta Belle Strickland Cousten.

She graduated from Tyler County High School, attended Mountain State Business College, and was a member of Gihon United Methodist Church. She was a member of Camden Clark Hospital Auxiliary, served as President of the Gihon Elementary School PTA, and was awarded a lifetime membership in the West Virginia PTA. She worked at several businesses in the Parkersburg area including Heck’s Department Store, Reichart’s Furniture Store and Uptowner Inn. She owned and operated the Klothes Kloset Consignment Shop. Hazel loved to travel (especially to historic sites), read, work puzzles and cook for her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Lawrence A. Thomas in 1980; an infant son, Kermith Robert, and son, William Keith Thomas in 1961; four brothers, Russell, Ralph, Arthur and Robert Cousten; and two sisters, Dorothy Housten and Velma Mead also preceded her in death.

Hazel is survived by four children, Donald D. Thomas of Spencer and Sandra K. Harding, Joyce A. Thomas and Randy L. Thomas, all of Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Bryan Keith Thomas (Debbie) of Parkersburg, Cindy Hagmann (Walter) of Woodbridge, Va., Angela Lynott (Gary Miller) of Belpre, Chad Harding (Leanna) of Davisville and Amanda Thomas of Lexington, Ky.; 10 great-grandchildren, Michele Haught, Crystal Lynott, Jordan Miller, Justin, Scottie and Quentin Hagmann, Brielle Thomas, Kai Simpson, Darby Harper and Jenna Harding; and five great-great-grandchildren, Cheylynn, Raleigh, Lucas, Olivia and Landon.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home on Pike Street, south Parkersburg, with the Rev. Jim Eakle officiating. Burial will follow at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
