Baby dies from injuries sustained in crash
KENNA, W.Va. – A 21-month-old baby has died from injuries in a car accident Tuesday on I-77 in Jackson County, the sheriff said Thursday.
The boy was in a car seat, but it appears it was not correctly installed, Sheriff Tony Boggs said.
The accident happened on I-77 near Kenna where a pickup truck driven by the baby’s mother Jessica Souther went out of control, the sheriff said. Also in the truck was Shawn Souther, the father.
The truck was traveling south and went out of control, crossed the median and went onto the northbound lane, Boggs said. The interstate northbound lanes were closed for several hours.
The three were taken to Charleston Area Medical Center where the baby, Gabriel, died on Tuesday, Boggs said. Mrs. Souther was under evaluation, and Souther was in fair condition on Thursday, a spokesman said.
No citations have been issued, but Boggs said the accident remains under investigation.
Services for the child are being handled by Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in south Parkersburg.
