Child suffers burns in house fire

ATHENS – Athens County officials are investigating a fire near Nelsonville on Friday.

Athens County Sheriff Patrick Kelly said a 12-year-old boy was badly burned at a residential fire on Ten Spot Road at Nelsonville.

Kelly said Deputies Mike Burba and Jon Arnold responded to the residential fire and were informed by Waterloo Fire Chief Craig Churchius there was heavy damage to the front of the residence and a child had been burned.

The resident told deputies her boys had friends staying over and one of the visiting boys awakened her Friday telling her the house was on fire. She, her boyfriend and boys exited the rear of the residence and once outside, realized 12-year-old Justin Dye was still in the residence.

Witnesses could hear the boy screaming and the boyfriend went back inside and brought the badly burned youth out of the residence. He was transported by emergency medical services, Kelly said.

The State Fire Marshals office has been summoned to investigate the fire.
