Kicks for Kids 5K race is Saturday

PARKERSBURG – The third annual Kicks for Kids 5K Run/Walk will get underway at 9 p.m. Saturday here in downtown Parkersburg.

Andy Nestor, the race director for the event, is more than excited about how the participation level has gone.

“I’m telling you, I’ve got great sponsors and I’ve got 300 pre-registered already,” Nestor said. “Last year we only had 309 participants.”

Although the early registration period has closed, anyone wanting to either run or walk in the 5K event still may do so for a cost of $15.

On Saturday, racers may register starting at 7 p.m. at the Downtown Farmers’ Marketplace located close to the Blennerhassett Hotel.

“This is about the biggest 5K around here other than the Turkey Tot Trot,” Nestor added. “It’s a really neat race.”

There are numerous divisions for all age groups and awards will be handed out, which includes one for having the best glow in the dark outfit. Of course, the reason this race was started was to help area kids in need of shoes.

“We got a shoes for kids program set up through the River City Runners (and Walkers Club) and we use this race to fund the shoes for kids that’s set up through all the county school systems,” Nestor explained.

The race starts on Market Street at 9th Street and finishes at the courthouse on Market Street.

Anyone who wishes to register online may do so at: – but it’s through today only.

Competitors will have a “bunch of food afterward,” to eat, according to Nestor, who said the program helped purchase 70 pairs of shoes last year alone.

“Every year it keeps getting better and better,” he said.

Jordan Whitehair of St. Marys and Belpre’s Amber Carter are the defending run champions of the event. Nick Wilson and Jocelyn Majoy captured the inaugural crowns in 2011.
