Janice Lee Sommerville Williams

Janice Lee Sommerville Williams, of Tollgate, 86, passed away on June 24, 2013.

She was born to the late Luther Hobert and Bernice Kent Sommerville, on Aug. 16, 1926, in West Union, W.Va. Janice graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1944. She married her high school sweetheart, Wilton E. Williams Jr., who preceded her in death by one month in 1945, and they lived in Colliers and Weirton, W.Va., Eldersville, Pa., and Bucks County, Pa., before relocating to Tollgate in 1972.

Janice was known for her musical talent, specifically singing, songwriting and playing the piano. She was a member of numerous choral groups and was a founding member of the Bucks County Choraliers. She acted in a number of community musical theater productions and accompanied and sang in a number of Easter and Christmas Cantatas throughout her lifetime. Janice was an active and beloved member of the Tollgate Seventh-day Adventist Church, and could often be found there at the piano bench.

Janice enjoyed painting, knitting and writing poetry. In 1983, she published a book of her poems, focusing on life in Bucks County, Pa., called “People, Places and Things.” She also enjoyed traveling and accompanied Wilton to Taiwan, Turkey and various European countries while he worked as a consultant for U.S. Steel.

Janice is survived by three children, Diana Weiss of New Hope, Pa., Phillip Kent Williams (Pamela) of Nashville, Tenn., and Timothy Andrew Williams (Michelle) of Cold Spring, Ky. She is also survived by five grandchildren, and a sister, Hoberta Sommerville, of Colonial Heights, Va.

A memorial service will be conducted in the Spurgeon Funeral Home, 212 Front St., West Union, on Sunday, July 14, at 2 p.m. There will be a time of gathering one hour prior to her service. Interment will follow in the Masonic Memorial Park, West Union.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tollgate Seventh Day Adventist Church Building Fund or the American Heart Association.
