Deputies hold picnic for kids
PARKERSBURG -The Wood County Deputy Sheriff’s Association gave away more than 50 bicycles Friday during its annual kids picnic at City Park in Parkersburg.
Association President Sgt. Dave Bussey expected about 500 people to attend the annual event, which typically brings between 500 and 1,000 children to the park each year.
The picnic featured inflatables from 19th Street Church of God, vehicles from the Parkersburg Fire Department and lunch.
“Everything is free,” Bussey said.
The picnic allows children of all ages to meet local deputies and law enforcement officials from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department. It’s been an on-going event for more than 20 years.
The association has about 60 members, Bussey said. Local deputy sheriffs and their spouses ran the show.
“The bicycle giveaway was the big draw,” Bussey said.
The sheriff’s office had its identification vehicle on hand to take photos and fingerprints to be placed on identification cards. The Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley provided helmets for riders.
The picnic is annually sponsored by the association and included food provided by local McDonald’s restaurants. Bussey said McDonald’s provides about 500 free meals for kids.
They also get a deal in pizza from Papa Johns.
“It gets a lot community support,” Bussey said.
