Police investigate incident at Wirt church camp

PALESTINE – West Virginia State Police are investigating an incident at a youth camp in Wirt County last weekend.

Bo Wriston, director of the Wirt County Office of Emergency Services, said an out-of-state youth was attending a church camp when the youth was run over by a wagon, suffering a severe injury. Wriston said the youth was life-flighted to Charleston.

Three sources familiar with the incident said the youth later died.

Trooper M.B. Jarvis from the Wirt County detachment said he cannot release information concerning the incident because it remains under investigation and the family has expressed a desire to keep the matter private.

“There is little information to release at this time,” Jarvis said. “Anything we could release, we would release.”

The accident happened at the Singing Hills Church Camp on Sonoma Road in Palestine.

The property is owned by the Singing Hills Association and the camp has ties to the Tri County Worship Center in Rockport. The church has been holding camps at Singing Hills for close to two decades.

Messages left at the church and for Pastor Everett Snyder were not returned.

Jarvis said if any details of the incident are released it will be based on the findings of the investigation. The incident is being investigated by Trooper J.M. DeMyer.
