Rally in the Alley set to return Wednesday

PARKERSBURG -Marshall green made an appearance a week ahead of the scheduled Rally in the Alley as several of the school’s assistant softball coaches scouted the West Virginia state softball tournament this past Wednesday at Jackson Park in Vienna.

Marshall pitching coach Chelsey Barclay, still brimming with excitement from her program’s recent success at the NCAA regional tournament in Lexington, Ky., kept a close eye on the Class A games.

After winning a regional game for the first time in 17 years, the Herd closed out the season at 36-22. Their accomplishments included the program’s first Conference USA championship and the second overall at Marshall University (volleyball, 2005).

“We set a whole new standard,” Barclay said.

Whether head coach Shonda Stanton joins the list of scheduled appearances by Marshall football coach Doc Holliday and men’s basketball coach Tom Herrion for Rally in the Alley is yet to be determined. Regardless, the event figures to have plenty of food and fun.

The annual visit by the Marshall Coaches Caravan is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday behind North End Tavern. The entry fee is a $30 donation. No admission is required for children.

North End Tavern owner Joe Roedersheimer will once again provide a relaxed setting – tailgate style -for the meet-and-greet session.

“This setting is much more informal,” Big Green committee member Jane Graham said. “I’ve been told this is one of their favorite stops because it is less confining.”

As for the Marshall softball team, Barclay is anticipating another deep run into the postseason next season. The Thunder Herd graduate only six seniors.

“We just can’t wait to get back to another regional appearance,” Barclay said.
