OVU Fight Night set for Saturday

PARKERSBURG – Ohio Valley University’s Fighting Scots Fight Night 1 is less than a week away and fans have a plethora of reasons to get excited about the fight card put together by Dawghouse Promotions.

Currently on tap for the expected 7:30 p.m. first fight on Saturday evening at OVU’s Alumni Gymnasium, where doors will open at 6:30 p.m., are a baker’s dozen bouts.

Local Dustin Echard will headline the main event as the ex-Parkersburg South Patriot will put his 5-0 (4 KOs) professional record on the line against Cincinnati’s Chris Govan. The fight, one of four professional boxing bouts on the card, is a scheduled light-heavyweight six-rounder.

One of the most interesting fights will be between a pair of Ohio Valley University wrestlers in Tyler Green and Kobinas Henriques, who will duke it out in an amateur crusierweight showdown that is scheduled for a trio of 60-second rounds.

In a middleweight all-Parkersburg affair, professionals Nate Hall and Steven Whitehair are scheduled to clash in a four-rounder. This will mark Hall’s pro boxing debut.

Scheduled to fight before the main event is Parkersburg’s Joe Paintiff (5-2-1). His heavyweight opponent is Michael Davis of Cincinnati, a veteran of 18 pro fights. The first pro fight on the card is expected to feature Warren Browning matching up with Deandre McCole.

The only kickboxing event on the bout sheet is a heavyweight match featuring Fayetteville’s Elijah Pyatt, a 21-year-old, going up against Josh Ramme of Columbus, Ohio, who is making his debut.

Several other area amateur fighters are expected to stand toe-to-toe in an event where proceeds go to benefit the Fighting Scots’ athletic programs. One of those features toughman champion Preston Wilson (9-0). He is set to face Canton’s Anthony Days, who is a state of Ohio amateur champion with a 10-2 mark, while toughman champ Andrew Tidd of Ravenswood is going up against Parkersburg’s Shawn Knotts.

Also of note, a pair of fighters from Beverly, Ohio, are on the card in Jason Wright (1-1) and Corey Smearman, who is making his debut. Parkersburg’s Mike Brown (3-1-1) and Randall Dunn (3-1) will face one another in an all-Parkersburg middleweight bout.

Tickets are available for a general admission cost of $20 and $15 for children 12-and-under. Corporate tables also may be purchased.

The OVU Fight Night 1 is sanctioned by the West Virginia State Athletic Commission and will feature former Parkersburg boxer Billy Cottrill making his debut as a ring announcer.

Fans looking for tickets can go to any of the four Mid-Ohio Valley locations of Anytime Fitness or pick them up in Mineral Wells at Chrissy’s Hair Studio or in Parkersburg at Uncle Mike’s Bar & Grill.
