Farmers market to open despite fire

MARIETTA – Despite a fire earlier this week, vendors at the River City Farmers Market will be available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today under the grandstands at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

A fire on Monday destroyed the Rabbit and Poultry Building where the weekly market was held. All contents were destroyed, but significant losses to crafts, goods and personal items have not broken the spirit of the area artists, farmers and hobbyists, according to Debbie Cunningham, vice president of the farmers market.

“We can’t look at it as things we have lost, instead we choose to recognize the things we have,” Cunningham said.

Donations can be made to a relief fund created in the market’s name through Advantage Bank.
