Down to one game

VIENNA – Nicole Landis and Morgan Trippett drew consecutive two-out RBI base on balls and Megan Bosley followed with a two-run bloop single to cap a decisive four-run fifth here Wednesday evening at Jackson Park as Parkersburg South rallied past Parkersburg, 4-1, to force a winner-take-all game three in the Class AAA, Region I, Section 1 softball tournament.

A day after falling 5-1 to the Big Reds in the sectional opener, Parkersburg South (10-22) head coach Jennifer Null’s Patriots received a 92-pitch, five-hit complete-game effort from Landis as the series finale is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch today back at Don Godbey Memorial Park.

“We decided to show them something a little different and it worked out,” said the senior Trippett, who had pitched against the Big Reds thrice this year and gave heavy praise to Landis’ solid mound performance.

“We were down (emotionally) at first after getting behind, but once we got our momentum going it worked out. Hopefully, we come out strong (Thursday) and on fire rather than waiting until the fourth or fifth inning to get it going.”

Parkersburg (15-19) dented the scoreboard first playing as the visiting team on its home field in the top of the second when Mallory Goots singled and eventually scored on a two-out RBI base knock by Courtney Bee, who finished 2 for 3. PHS could’ve done more damage in the frame as Taylor Beckley led off the inning by reaching on an error before being tagged out at home by Patriot catcher Trinity Fury after she tried to score on a wild pitch.

After Bee’s single, Landis retired eight straight before Bee singled back up the box in the fifth. Although PHS got back-to-back infield hits from Morgan Lanham and Kaleigh Westfall, Landis got out of the jam when Big Red catcher Brittany Allison hit a grounder to Trippett at third, who stepped on the bag to end the threat. From there, Landis retired the final seven Big Reds in order.

In the fifth, No. 9 hitter Hannah Wilson got the big inning started when she drew a two-out free pass from Big Red losing pitcher Cassidy Newbrough. Logan Somerville and Fury, who both went 2 for 4, followed with singles to load the bases. Landis’ walk forced in Wilson. The bases on balls to Trippett plated Somerville with what proved to be the winning run and Bosley’s two-run hit scored courtesy runner Cheyanna Dellinger and Landis.

Landis allowed just one earned run, didn’t walk a batter and recorded four strikeouts. Newbrough issued a quartet of free passes, punched out five and allowed seven hits and four earned runs.
