8:30 a.m., Arrive at office. Unload items from last night’s Business After Hours hosted by Home Helpers, who celebrated their 7th anniversary in the community with great door prizes and delicious cake.

Open Parkersburg News, scan obituaries, read business, legislative, and education stories, smile at horoscope. The story about WV State budget reminds me that the date of our May Government Relations committee meeting conflicts with our annual Women in Leadership luncheon on May 1; send quick email to chair Jeff Matheny about moving the committee meeting.

9 a.m., Phone calls begin: “I participated as a booth in the Harvest Moon Festival last year. When is the date this year?” Refer caller to the Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) who keeps community events calendar on their website ( and encourage her to connect with the name/number of the event organizer from last year to get signed for this year

9:30 a.m., Head to Workforce WV offices in Lakeview Center for Workforce Investment Board meeting. Hear update on Workforce WV meetings with local employers and their primary challenges: amazing number of potential employees who can’t pass the pre-employment drug test and reliability/absenteeism by new hires.

11 a.m., Time to setup for monthly Public Relations committee workshop. 25 Chamber members are joining us for lunch to hear tips about media relations and how to prepare a media release.

Noon, Media Essentials workshop begins. Presenter Rich Schaffer with the WV Credit Union League is engaging and humorous in his presentation style. Several new faces at the event (welcome John Jackson, the new director of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service) and many “seasoned” professionals like Robin Ollis-Stemple from DuPont Washington Works and Mary Barnette with Community Bank.

1:30 p.m., Stay after workshop to visit with several Chamber members; thank them for attending; solicit ideas for future Media workshops; many hearty laughs sharing past media successes and hiccups. Next month Rob Fouss with Suddenlink Media will present opportunities with cable advertising for the PR Workshop on May 15.

3 p.m., Participate in web-based training for new membership database program – getting ready to roll out new online member directory and update our website functionality!

4 p.m., Prepare and send comments for the article Parkersburg News reporter Brett Dunlap is researching about the new WV legislation requiring online retailers to collect WV sales tax; grab stack of work and reading material to review at home this evening

5:30 p.m., Attend groundbreaking for the Humane Society’s new spay and neuter clinic

6:30 p.m., Attend the recognition dinner for the Wood County National Board Certified Teachers. The Chamber’s Education & Business Foundation sponsored the dinners for the 6 new NBCTs in Wood County. Visit with Lois Meadows, the first NBCT teacher in Wood County; she asks about my brother in Charlotte and requests information on behalf of a not-for-profit organization she is involved with that is interested in joining the Chamber.

8 p.m., Wave at the Chamber’s Administrative Assistant Jennifer walking her dog on Grand Central Avenue as I head home for the day!

I hope you see some key themes in this snapshot of activities in a typical day at the Chamber:

* We are proud of the calendar of great events and programs we facilitate for our members.

* We participate with many organizations that support commerce, workforce development and education.

* We are often confused in the minds of the general public with the CVB.

* We work very hard to stay informed about key issues and legislation and to be a resource for our local media.

* We like to have fun!
