John A. Simpkin

John A. Simpkin (Jack), 86, died in Venice, Fla., on April 17, 2013.

He was born on Feb. 19, 1927 is Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., the son of John E. and Susan Griffin Simpkin.

After graduating from Sault High, he entered the University of Notre Dame at the age of 16. He interrupted his studies to enlist in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Upon discharge, returned to Notre Dame, received an electrical engineering degree in 1949 and began his career with Union Carbide Corp., retiring as plant manager of the Marietta, Ohio ferro-alloys plant after 32 years of service.

He also served as production manager for the special metals operations in Carbide’s plants in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Portland, Ore., and Marietta, Ohio.

Jack was a charter member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Venice, Fla., a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Brimley, Mich., and a member of the Knights of Columbus. During his working years, he was actively involved in civic and church activities.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Carole, and daughters Carole Steinke, Judith (Rick) Allen, sons John C., Terrence, James (Patricia) and Thomas, 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sister Susanne Polden and brother in law Henry Petruska. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Sr Susanne IBVM, Norah Petruska, Elizabeth Andary and her husband Paul. A Memorial Mass is being held at Our Lady of Lourdes on April 19th at 1:30. Arrangements are being handled by Farley Funeral Home.
