United Way exceeds campaign goal

VIENNA -The United Way Alliance has once again exceeded its campaign goal.

Officials with the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley held a press conference Friday morning to announce they had raised more than $768,000.

“I feel like this is a major accomplishment in these tough economic times,” said executive director Joyce Mather. “The partnership and volunteerism has been amazing to help us achieve reaching our goal.”

David Hines, chairman of the board of the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley, said when the goal was announced last fall it was hoped enough funds would be raised to:

* Fund local agencies and programs that significantly contribute to the health and wellness throughout the MOV;

* Provide emergency response funds to our agencies;

* Fund the operations of the United Way Alliance office.

“The United Way’s success hinges on many individuals and organizations giving,” Hines said.

In addition to meeting the $722,000 goal for the United Way, Mather said they also raised $11,000 for non-member agencies and $11,000 for United Way agencies in Washington County, Marietta, Athens and Charleston. Sixteen local fire departments and emergency squads also received funds.

Hines also noted the groups’ efforts with backpacks, dental pouches and prescription discount cards.

Hines called it an “incredibly busy year for staff and support.”

Mather said officials soon will begin the process for the kickoff for the fall campaign in September.
