Oxbow renovations big topic at chamber luncheon

BELPRE – Oxbow Golf Course near Belpre showed off its recent renovations Thursday during the Belpre Area Chamber monthly luncheon.

“We have done a lot of work and are proud of it,” said co-owner Pam Tanner Boll.

Many changes have been made to the clubhouse and area surrounding the building located at 500 St. Andrews Blvd., off Ohio 339.

The clubhouse received a new bar and meeting facilities. There is a new outdoor eating area and the outdoor fireplace has been moved.

“We hope to make this place a nice area for meetings and parties,” Boll said. “We also plan to have special events here in the summer for the community and golfers.”

The course also received a new cart path, driving ranges and sand traps.

An unveiling of all of the changes will be held on April 19 with the grand opening party.

Boll and her siblings purchased a 50 percent share of Oxbow last year from Lloyd Cowell of Vincent and the heirs of his late brother, George. The other 50 percent of the facility is owned by Ned Tanner, the father of Boll and her siblings.

Members of the Belpre High School Golf Team attended the luncheon and thanked Oxbow general manager Mark Brooks for everything the course does for youth of the area.

“My son started golfing at Oxbow when he was 5 or 6, when the clubs were bigger than him, and now he is doing well on the high school team,” said Hershel Petty, father of Sam Petty. “He is whipping me in every way.”

Hershel Petty thanked Brooks for opening up the golf course to children through the kids teams as well as offering the greens to high schools.

Brooks said the golf teams of Belpre, Warren and Eastern Local high schools use Oxbow free-of-charge to practice.
