Hayek named Vienna’s 2012 Firefighter of the Year
VIENNA – For a sense of community.
That’s why Nick Hayek said he continues to serve on the volunteer fire department for the city of Vienna.
“We all do it together,” Hayek said. “Anybody here would do anything for each other.”
Hayek is the 2012 Vienna Firefighter of the Year. He said he continues to be part of the volunteer department for his community and to give back to his city.
“It’s rewarding to meet people,” he said. “I enjoy helping. It’s not all pleasant but it’s not all horrible either.”
He said he became a firemen after meeting his previous department’s fire chief and being shown around the station. He was promoted to sergeant of rescue in January 2012. The fire department has 35 members on the roster and all 35 are on call around the clock, he said.
Hayek joined the department in April 2001 about 12 years ago.
The 32-year old father of an 11-month old son, Owen, said his wife is the reason he has been able to give his services to his community all these years.
“This award should have gone to my family,” Hayek said of his wife and son.
He has been married to his wife, Sarah, for about three years and they have been together for the past 11 years, he said. The Vienna native said it was a shock to receive the award from his fellow firemen. The team of firefighters who select the recipient have received the award in at least the last three years and are not eligible for it again.
“It was a shock, I didn’t expect it,” he said. “It’s humbling to be chosen over 12 other guys but it should’ve gone to my family.”
Hayek will be on the committee to select the receipts of the award for the next three years.
“It’s also very rewarding, I’ve gotten to know quite a few members throughout the state,” he said.
