Great American Home Show to open Friday

PARKERSBURG – The 2013 Great American Home Show, opening Friday and running through Sunday, will provide ideas on home improvement projects area residents may want to tackle this spring.

Sponsored by the Home Builders Association of the Mid-Ohio Valley, the home show will be held in the former Big Bear in the Park Shopping Center and will feature about 70 vendors.

John Farnsworth, executive director of the association, said a new addition to last year’s home show will be returning and expanding this year.

“We will be doubling our crafters,” he said. “Last year, we had about 15 crafters and they were very happy” with how things went during the home show, Farnsworth said.

“I already have about 30 crafters this year,” he said.

The home show will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults, $5 for couples and free for children.

“This year, 10 percent of admissions will be donated to the Kyle Hockenberry Home,” Farnsworth said, referring to the “smart” home being built for the wounded Washington County veteran.

The home show features builders, remodelers, landscapers, heating-and-cooling experts, kitchen-and-bath specialists, foundation repair, patio builders, pavement companies, carpet services, energy-efficient windows and doors, home security, home design, fencing, insulation products, satellite television, and lawn and garden equipment.

The Great American Home Show has been an annual event in the area for more than 30 years and remains popular with local residents. Attendance for the weekend usually runs between 3,500-4,000 people.

The event’s sponsors include Simonton Windows and Wayne Homes.

Organizers are giving away $500, $250 and $125 as door prizes to be used with any vendor in the show. There will be a silent auction with more than 75 items to bid on.
