Arlena Ray Smith Cummings

Arlena Ray Smith Cummings, formerly of Wolf Summit, received her angel wings on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, in Parkersburg, at Worthington Nursing & Rehabilitation.

She was born Oct. 25, 1925, near Grove, in Doddridge County, the daughter of the late Carsie O. Smith and Lois Sinnett Smith. For 65 years, Arlena was the devoted wife of Lavere B. Cummings, who preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 2010.

Arlena is survived by her children, Donna (Ron) Gault of Parkersburg, Ricky Cummings of Louisville, Ohio, and Linda Loy of Malvern, Ohio; sister, Karen (Lewis) Shepherd of West Union; brother-in-law, Clayton Seal of Salem; and her grandchildren, whom she loved and prayed for, Brian Gault, Lois (Jason) Adkins, Scott (Missy) Fittro, Tammy (Lee) McEwen, Michelle (Tom) White and Keith (Amanda) Cummings. Also special to her were seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Arlena was preceded in death by her brother, Argil (Pauline) Smith; sister, Betty Seal; and grandson, Darin Fittro.

Arlena was a faithful member of the Wolf Summit Wesleyan Methodist Church, that she began attending as a teenager. She taught Sunday School classes for 47 years, directed congregational music, and was church clerk for many years. Arlena cooked lunches for the Wolf Summit Grade School, cleaned homes to provide income for Donna to attend college, and cared for senior citizens in their home as a Certified Nursing Aide for 13 years. In April 2010, Arlena became a resident at the Colonial House in Parkersburg. She enjoyed independent living in the southern hospitality setting. Relaxing on the screened in porch and sharing hymns with new friends, provided an opportunity to witness for Jesus. Judy Prater became a special friend, who welcomed Arlena into the caring Emmanuel Baptist Church congregation. She was last able to attend church on Easter 2012, to enjoy the choir and sermon of Rev. Kurt Busiek. In Sept. 2012, Arlena became a resident at Worthington, where she was lovingly called “pretty lady” by the wonderful caring staff. The family expresses their appreciation for allowing Arlena to die with loving dignity as a result of pneumonia.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wolf Summit Wesleyan Methodist Church, RR 4, Box 300, Salem, WV 26426.
